How to get car dealers to compete for your business

Send the same exact spec (year, model, trim, packages) to several dealers within your travel range, ask each for a written out-the-door price without add-ons, then share the best written total with the others and ask if they can beat it. Compare totals, not monthly payments, and only quotes for the same car.

Same car, or it is not a comparison

A different package or a pre-installed add-on can hide a big difference. Match the spec line by line before ranking quotes.

Written beats spoken

A number said on the phone tends to change by the time you arrive. A written total with itemised lines can be shown to the next dealer and checked at signing.

Distance has a cost

A cheaper dealer far away can cost more after fuel, time and any return visits. Count those before you choose.

Quick answers

Will dealers really bid against each other?

Many will answer a clear written request from a ready buyer. Some will not, and that is fine; the others still compete.

Should I mention my trade-in?

Not until the car's price is settled. Then ask for trade offers separately.
